A trademark is one trust signal among several, and no single signal is enough on its own. If you buy silver jewellery in volume, the stakes are high, so this guide shows how to check that any silver supplier is genuine, with the checks we would run ourselves, and how GlamBug measures up against them.
The checks, in order
1. Is it a real, registered business?
- Ask for the legal name, address and GST number (GSTIN). A supplier who will not share them is a warning sign.
- Check the GSTIN on the government GST portal, which has a public taxpayer search. The legal name and state should match what the supplier tells you.
- For a company, the registered name and CIN can be checked on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs website.
2. Does the brand have a registered trademark?
- The Trade Marks Registry has a public search. Look up the brand name, and check that the owner's name matches the business you are dealing with and that the class makes sense.
- A trademark shows who owns a brand name, and it gives the owner the legal means to act against copies. It does not prove that the products are good, so treat it as one signal, not a certificate of quality.
- Trademarks are registered by class: Class 35 covers business and trade services, and Class 14 covers jewellery and precious metals. A supplier with a registration in the class that matches what they do is a better sign than one with none.
3. Is there a BIS hallmark registration?
- The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) runs the hallmarking scheme. Ask the supplier for their BIS registration or certificate number, and verify it with BIS.
- Ask what the registration covers. For silver jewellery, the relevant standard is IS 2112.
4. Check the pieces, not only the paper
- Look for the 925 mark or the hallmark on the piece.
- For a large order, have a sample tested for purity, for example by XRF or at an assaying and hallmarking centre, before you commit to the full quantity.
- See the pieces live before ordering. A video call shows finish, weight and detail that photos hide.
5. Does the price make sense?
Silver jewellery is priced by weight, and the metal alone has a market value per gram. A price far below the going rate for the weight is a reason to ask why, because the difference usually comes from lower purity, thin plating or hidden costs.
6. Are the paperwork and payment clean?
- Insist on a proper GST invoice in the supplier's company name.
- Pay into a bank account in the company's name, not a personal account, and keep the payment record.
- Read the shipping and returns terms before you order. Clear, written terms show a supplier who expects to be held to them.
- Check that the contact details are consistent across the website, the invoice and the messages.
Red flags
- No GST number, no invoice, or a refusal to name the business.
- Payment requested only to personal accounts.
- Prices far below the market rate for the weight.
- No written shipping or returns terms.
- Pressure to pay quickly, or unwillingness to show the pieces on a live call.
- A hallmark or certificate number that cannot be verified.
