Indian Rupee Strengthens — Stability Returns to Gold & Silver Markets
On 16 October 2025, the Indian rupee gained strength, trading at ₹87.55 to ₹87.60 per US dollar, against ₹88.80 the day before. That was its strongest level in nearly six weeks, since 29 August, and gold and silver prices looked steadier after weeks of swings.
Updated October 2026 to explain how the rupee affects silver prices. The figures above are from that day and are not current rates.
If you buy or sell silver jewellery, the exchange rate matters more than it seems. This post explains why, and how to plan around it.
How the rupee moves silver prices in India
Silver is priced internationally in US dollars. India imports most of the silver it uses, so the price you pay in rupees depends on two things together:
- The international silver price, in dollars.
- The rupee-dollar exchange rate.
Other costs sit on top, such as import duty and GST, but the idea is simple: if the rupee gets stronger, the same dollar price converts into fewer rupees, and the other way round. A fall in the rupee can raise silver prices in India even when the international price has not moved.
That is why a rupee gain, such as the move on 16 October 2025, can ease domestic prices, and why a sudden fall can push them up.
What it means for jewellers and wholesalers
- Margins. Silver jewellery is priced by weight, so when the metal rate moves between your purchase and your sale, your margin moves.
- Procurement costs. Goods imported or priced against the dollar get dearer or cheaper as the rate changes.
- Planning. In a calmer stretch, it is easier to quote and plan for festive and export seasons.
How to buy sensibly when rates swing
- Compare on the same basis. Look at the per-gram rate and the weight, so you can see how a price is made up. Our catalogue shows both.
- Don't chase every move. A single day's change is not a trend.
- Plan purchases in lots. Buying in steps spreads the risk of buying at a peak.
- Keep quotes valid for a short time, and confirm the rate when you place the order.
- Consider locking a rate for a bulk order. Ask us what is possible for your quantity.
